Dept. of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene

Gum disease may increase the likelihood of serious health issues, such as diabetes or heart disease. Students in the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene at UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry are learning how to care for gums and other tissues that surround the teeth, improving the health of both the mouth and body.

For more than 115 years, the School of Dentistry has led the way in advanced dental care, and it remains the only school in the Houston area to offer a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene. Your gift, in any amount, will continue this legacy and help ensure a healthier tomorrow.

Our Top Priorities

Chair Fund

Opportunities for progress come in many forms and often arise quickly. Our Chair Fund allows department leadership to help in all areas of need, from advancing leading-edge oral health research to ensuring our students have the resources they need to succeed and to other opportunities that advance each department’s mission at a moment’s notice.

Advanced Education Fund

With nearly 60 million people across the United States living in underserved areas, our communities need dental professionals more than ever. Your gift today toward the Advanced Education Fund will create opportunities for our students to develop into the experts who will fill this gap and advance the field of oral health care. By supporting these students, you are supporting a healthier future for our friends and families.

Research Fund

Everyone deserves quality oral health care no matter their age, status, or location – and this is why research is so important. Innovation and discovery keep us on the frontlines of the dental profession and provide new ways of serving our communities. When you make a gift to the Research Fund, you support groundbreaking work that will bring new smiles to our friends, families, and neighbors.

Dental Hygiene Class of 2003 Endowment Fund

Dental hygienists play a critical role in safeguarding patient health—conducting cleanings, performing health screenings, and advising patients on proper oral hygiene—but a workforce shortage makes it more important than ever to train more of these professionals. The Dental Hygiene Class of 2003 Endowment Fund provides financial support for dental hygiene students in financial need, allowing them to focus on their studies and graduate with reduced debt. By making a gift today, you will help these students become the dental hygienists who will provide essential dental care throughout our communities.

The GHDHA Ushma Ramayia Memorial Scholarship

Dental hygienists perform essential work that keeps the mouth healthy and clean—and we take great pride in the excellence of our training program. Your gift to The GHDHA Ushma Ramayia Memorial Scholarship will support second-year dental hygiene students who demonstrate the compassion, teamwork, and leadership that define the profession.
