Research at MMS

At McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, we are dedicated to quality patient care and the research that makes that care possible. Our experts are studying diseases, injuries, treatments, and vaccines to improve the lives of patients around the world. Everyone deserves quality health care no matter their age, status, or location – and this is why research is so important. Innovation and discovery keep us on the frontlines of our field and provide new ways of improving lives in our communities.

When you make a gift to support important research initiatives at our school, like some of the priorities below, you help advance groundbreaking work that will shape the future of health care for our friends and families.

Our Top Priorities

Atrial Fibrillation Research Fund

Atrial fibrillation (AFIB), the most common type of irregular heart rhythm, significantly increases the risk of stroke, heart failure, and other cardiovascular complications. Olasimbo M. Chiadika, MD, associate professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at McGovern Medical School, is working alongside researchers to better understand its mechanisms and risk factors while developing effective treatments to save lives. Make a gift of any size today to the Atrial Fibrillation Research Fund to help the many people experiencing this serious condition.

Division of General and Thoracic Pediatric Surgery Research Fund

Researchers in the Division of General and Thoracic Pediatric Surgery at McGovern Medical School, led by pediatric surgeon and division chief KuoJen Tsao, MD, are working to uncover innovative surgical techniques to improve the lives of children facing debilitating health conditions. Discoveries made in our labs hold the potential to save young lives around the world. Your gift of any amount to the Division of General and Thoracic Pediatric Surgery Research Fund will help improve children’s treatment options and quality of life.

Fetal Center Research Support Fund

At The Fetal Center at UTHealth Houston, our scientists discover innovative ways to help children before they are even born, changing the course of their lives. Anthony Johnson, DO, Co-Director for The Fetal Center and professor in the department of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences at McGovern Medical School, is spearheading this life-changing research to improve the standard of care for expecting mothers and growing families. Make a donation of any size today to the Fetal Center Research Support Fund to help advance the discovery of new interventions and improve the trajectory of a child’s health.

Linda Gail Behavioral Health Research Fund

A growing number of people struggle every day with clinical depression, bipolar disorder, or other mood disorders. The challenges are both devastating to the sufferers, who often face shortened lifespans and poorer quality of life, and to their whole families. The Linda Gail Behavioral Health Research Fund provides resources for Giselli Scaini, PharmD, MsC, PhD, an instructor at the Faillace Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and her team as they work to understand the causes of these devastating illnesses at the molecular level and develop innovative treatments to help patients overcome even the most severe mood disorders. With your support, you become our partner in behavioral health research and treatment for children, adolescents, and adults, helping to conduct innovative research that will lead to advances and breakthroughs in scientific research.

Treatment Resistant Depression Research Fund

Some people with debilitating depression do not find relief from standard treatments, but our researchers, led by John S. Dunn Distinguished Professor in the Faillace Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Treatment-Resistant Depression Clinic Director Joao L. de Quevedo, MD, PhD, commit themselves daily to discovering innovative ways to improve the lives of these patients. By donating to the Treatment Resistant Depression Research Fund today in any amount, you will help us break through the barriers of treatment-resistant depression and bring hope and healing to the growing number of people affected by this illness.
