Dept. of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene

Gum disease may increase the likelihood of serious health issues, such as diabetes or heart disease. Students in the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene at UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry are learning how to care for gums and other tissues that surround the teeth, improving the health of both the mouth and body.

For more than 115 years, the School of Dentistry has led the way in advanced dental care, and it remains the only school in the greater Houston area to offer a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene. Your gift of any size will continue this legacy and help ensure a healthier tomorrow.

Our Top Priorities

Chair Fund

Advancing oral health care requires adaptability, as new challenges and opportunities emerge over time. The Chair Fund provides flexible resources to support key departmental priorities, such as advancing leading-edge oral health research, providing financial aid to students, or purchasing new equipment. Your contribution to the Chair Fund allows us to respond swiftly, investing in promising initiatives as they arise and ensuring progress toward a healthier community.

Advanced Education Fund

Our communities need skilled dental professionals more than ever. Your gift of any size to the Advanced Education Fund will help us equip dentistry residents with the comprehensive training needed to excel in clinical practice and research.

Research Fund

Everyone deserves quality oral health care no matter their age, status, or location—and this is why research is so important. Innovation and discovery keep us on the frontlines of the dental field and lead to better patient outcomes in communities near and far. When you make a gift to the Research Fund, you support groundbreaking work that is accelerating the oral health advancements of tomorrow.

Dental Hygiene Class of 2003 Endowment Fund

Dental hygienists play a critical role in safeguarding patient health—conducting cleanings, performing health screenings, and advising patients on proper oral hygiene—but a workforce shortage makes it more important than ever to train more of these professionals. The Dental Hygiene Class of 2003 Endowment Fund provides financial support for dental hygiene students in financial need, allowing them to focus on their studies and graduate with reduced debt. By making a gift today, you will help these students become the dental hygienists who will provide essential dental care throughout our communities.

The GHDHA Ushma Ramayia Memorial Scholarship

Dental hygienists perform essential work that keeps the mouth healthy and clean—and we take great pride in the excellence of our dental hygiene training program. Your gift to The GHDHA Ushma Ramayia Memorial Scholarship will support second-year dental hygiene students who demonstrate the compassion, teamwork, and leadership that define the profession.
