Genetic Counseling

Genes hold many secrets to a person’s health, revealing predispositions to future disease and clues to the best treatment options. Genetic counselors serve as guides and advocates, helping patients discover vital information to manage their health effectively. These experts can shed light on a wide range of medical situations, from enabling parents to understand their newborn’s screening to helping women with a family history of breast cancer know their risks and options.

With a growing need for more highly trained experts in this field, MD Anderson UTHealth Houston Graduate School connects two powerhouses of innovation to fill this gap. Your gift of any size will fuel education in this life-changing field so that tomorrow’s genetic counselors can help patients chart a course to greater well-being.

Our Top Priorities

Genetic Counseling Research and Education Endowed Fund

Genetic counselors work with families to assess the risks of inherited medical conditions and help them navigate the complex decisions that can follow. Many bright students have the compassion and motivation to serve in these crucial roles but need financial assistance to obtain their education. By making a gift today in support of the Genetic Counseling Research and Education Endowed Fund, you will help students focus on their studies and future patients receive the specialized guidance they need.

Jaqueline T. Hecht Founding Director Scholarship

Named in honor of the pioneering UTHealth Houston faculty member who started the first genetics counseling program in Texas, the Jaqueline T. Hecht Founding Director Scholarship provides financial aid to hard-working students, helping them to become the health experts who serve people throughout the region. Your donation of any size to the Jaqueline T. Hecht Founding Director Scholarship will help students learn to assess risk and become the genetic counselors who will help guide families through complex health situations.
